Dash does not feel lucky. When his plane crashes in the South Pacific on a honeymoon flight to Sydney, Australia, he is already a broken man, having left his cheating fiancee at home in Vermont. Dash is the crash's only survivor, and the natives who find his battered body blame him for poisoning their fish with spilled jet fuel. Once he has sufficiently recovered, they plan to offer him as a human sacrifice to their Volcano God, who they believe downed his plane and cursed them with drought and hardship. While Dash awaits his fate, he abandons all hope of rescue. But his new life has its moments. He meets ten-year-old Tiki, daughter of the chief and an innocent who dreams of being chosen by the soldiers who occasionally visit their island. He also conjures up an imaginary friend, Weeleekonawahulahoopa Willy, for short. Willy is half-man, half-fish, a sometime god who resigned his lofty status after failing to save his people from drowning. As Dash comes to understand the natives who hold him captive and confront his own unhappy past, he suspects that he might not be so unlucky after all.

being a godless heathen. “Pretty much the same as the missioners,” he said. Tiki held out both hands to count on her fingers. “We have a Sea God and a God of the Sun. A Bird, Time, and Dirt God. The Volcano God, Storm God, and Wave God. The Wave God is different from the Sea God. That’s eight, and there’s one more,” she said, frowning, trying to remember. “Our one god is supposed to watch over everything.” She shook her head. “The world is too big.” She put a thumb and index finger together

Wet sneakers and muddy pants. Miniature clothing covered miniature body parts. “Be careful.” The explorers would go as far as thorn bushes allowed, boats driven by fearless captains finally dipping into dark channels between mossy rocks. Everything disappeared. A truck with a flashing yellow dome over the cab rolled up the street, pushing a wave of dirty ice over the curb. Brakes squealed at the end of the apartment walkway. The truck’s salt spreader cast pellets in a shimmering arc. The

still, and there seemed to be no birds. When he looked behind, Willy was almost clear, his body leaning so far back that his head touched the sea, bulb submerged. The bow should be high in the air with all the weight so far aft, but then Dash realized Willy probably weighed no more than a bad dream. “You could have saved her,” Dash hissed, drooling despite his thirst and ruined lips. He wished for the strength to push the former god overboard. “You did nothing. I made you up, and now I’m done

Hundreds of steps to go, a staircase from base to summit of the trembling mountain. It was the view from the front roller coaster car that faced its first terrifying tower. What went up would go down real fast, and he knew they’d be going faster than any mere fun park ride. Their free fall would be the real deal. Even the fishermen, accustomed to unstable

people hooted and cheered even though they didn’t understand the game. Dash decorated the former love hut with washed up treasures. His most recent score was a Mr. Potato Head with eyes, one pink ear, and a mustache. Like the stars, moon, and the rain, the toy was a link to home. Enough of one that Dash hadn’t rebuilt the signal fire, at least not yet. His wang still failed him, but he was no longer fodder for the volcano. With the pressure off, maybe his wang would come around. Some of the new
