Downscale private dick Harry Rigby starts tossing out wisecracks like lit packets of firecrackers on page one of this Irish crime story, and he doesn't let up until the last sordid plot strand is singed into submission. In both the dialogue and first-person narration, Rigby resembles the gin-soaked love child of Rosalind Russell and William Powell--except he smokes pot instead of swilling martinis. Rigby's incessant linguistic pyrotechnics might seem like obnoxious overkill to some. But readers who roll with the patter--'I wanted to ask how come blondes never got around to dyeing their eyebrows but her eyes were closed and the gash in her throat ran six inches east to west'--will find it driving the story forward at a thrilling pace. That's a good thing, as the plot's a convoluted mess of bitter backstabbing among stock ne'er-do-wells sniffing after an illicit drug concession. But Rigby is a winning protagonist, and the underlying struggle with his memorably sociopathic brother, Gonzo, helps make this a wild ride worth taking.""-Booklist

She didn’t disappoint. “Who is she?” she asked. “Who’s who?” “She. Her. The one you were with.” “I told you. I was on my tod.” “All night? Until now?” She tugged at the quilt, to remind me that she already had about ninety per cent of it tucked under her chin. Breathing through her nose, heavy. “What’s up,

That much he had already.” Brady spat, pulled up his belt up. “Next time, send him to me. No – next time, bang him up.” “Yessir. What charge?” He looked at me for the first time, top to bottom in a sideways glance. “Cheap shoes,” he sneered. “And hey, Kilfeather?” “What?” “Get snotty again and I’ll wipe your fucking nose.” He went back to the Mondeo, lit a

There was no trace of the bluster he’d treated me to last time out. “I believe I forgot to remind you that I had a prior appointment this morning.” The secretary glared a couple of daggers and left. “I don’t mind if she stays,” I told Conway, nodding at the Ice Queen. “But it’s money talk.” “Helen is privy to all my financial affairs.” I sparked the smoke. “This is dirty money, Frank. It’s dirty because it’s buried and

When his forehead reached the level of my nose, I swung my knee full force into his groin. He went down squealing, sprawled out on the snow, face down. Buckled as he was, he still reached for his gun; I didn’t make a game of it. I drew a boot on the side of his head, connected so well he ricocheted off the car door. He curled into a ball, groaning. You’re going to get to The Odeon with a couple of your Dibble mates, and you’re going to arrest those two and put them away for as long as possible. Understand?” “You’re giving me orders, Rigby?” Still a yard off the pace. “There’ll be an old bloke there too, doing your job for you. And you’re going to
