These stories have two common denominators: nature and war. Finland is sparsely populated, and its citizens form close ties with nature; it has also been torn between the empires of Sweden and Russia. Wolf Bride, by Aino Kallas, is set in the mid-17th century. Aalo, a woodsman’s wife, watches a wolf hunt. Later, she can’t resist joining the wolves in the forest and becomes a werewolf. At night she runs with wolves, by day she plays the part of a devoted wife. It’s an eerie tale with an unexpected ending. Tove Jansson is best known for her Moomintroll stories, but her piece is very adult. Following an unspecified disaster, a wife shops for her injured husband by climbing through shattered windows and looking for food among the wreckage. She relishes her role as breadwinner far too much! The editor’s own offering, Transit, tells how a young autistic girl speaks for the first time in 14 years and persuades a drunken hellraiser to help her steal some dolphins.

... intriguing and eye-opening. Rooted in the myths and legends of Nordic sagas, it’s very alive to the modern world, too. -- Matt Warman in The Daily Telegraph

we got back from our walk Boman said: ‘You and your books have taught me that one always has to choose between two or more options.’ ‘That’s true,’ I replied. ‘Life is about making choices.’ ‘Maybe your life and your truth. I want to choose both options, so I’d like to go outside.’ ‘By all means,’ I said. ‘Please, no one is stopping you.’ ‘Then would you open the door,’ Boman growled angrily. ‘Sorry, I didn’t realise it was shut. Please remember to be careful, it would be terrible if those

me. She didn’t say anything, she just looked me right in the eyes. And I’ve never, never seen anyone look at me like that before, I looked back into her eyes and it was like looking down two tunnels with light flickering at the end, but still they were normal eyes – the way she looked at me, it was like someone had punched me in the stomach. And at that same moment I was sure as hell she was the most amazing bird I’d ever seen. The woman of my dreams. I mean, she was sort of … (unclear; voice

tangled coat; her dainty little face narrowed into the long muzzle of a wolf; her small, pretty ears grew into the pointed ears of a wolf; her teeth turned to ferocious fangs and her nails to the curved claws of a beast of the wilds. But so skilfully does the Devil in his infinite cunning fit a wolf skin around the frame of a human that the claws and the teeth and even the ears each fall at exactly the right place, as if she had been taken from her mother’s womb thus and entered this world as

man winked and told Huttunen to go and have a chat with Old Aatami, ‘and don’t forget to take all the fags and daily allowance you’ve got,’ he added. Esko Huttunen bribed the duty officer with coffee and buns, went down to the infirmary after lights out and didn’t return until just before morning muster. Huttunen seemed perfectly strong and healthy, he was like a new man. The corporals and the head of the division, a vindictive old bastard by the name of Sergeant Kilpinen, had got wind of

Cork leant over my desk again sending waves of heavy, sickly air wafting in my direction. I jumped back in my chair. Perhaps this was the stench of his brain fluid. ‘It’s best to use a chair with a head rest. A decent work chair or a sturdy armchair would be fine too. If you could get your hands on a dentist’s chair, it would be your lucky day. You’ll need to build some kind of support so the head stays firmly in position. And a safety belt, you’d better not forget that! It would be rather
